What Is Scaling and Polishing?
Scaling is the process of removing the build up of calculus from the teeth and around the gums. It is typically performed using ultrasonic scalers, which uses high-frequency vibrations and a gentle water spray to break down and flush away plaque and tartar from the teeth and around the gumline.
Supragingival scaling focuses on cleaning above the gumline. This is the most common type of scaling and targets visible plaque and tartar on the tooth surfaces. It helps prevent early gum inflammation and keeps teeth clean and fresh.
Subgingival scaling targets plaque and bacteria below the gumline, where they are harder to see and reach. This type of scaling is especially important for patients with gum disease, bleeding gums, or deeper gum pockets.
After scaling, polishing is done to smooth the tooth surfaces. A special polishing paste and rotating brush are used to gently buff the teeth. Scaling
